Trustees

Job description

Citizens Advice Barnet seeks new Trustees to join the board to help this established local charity continue to provide its vital services to the diverse communities of Barnet.

Ever since we were founded in 1939, Citizens Advice Barnet has been providing free, confidential and impartial advice to people who live, work and study in Barnet, as well as campaigning on big issues affecting people's lives by using the data we collect to influence policies and practices that affect the lives of people in Barnet. Our Vision is a borough where no resident suffers disadvantage as a result of an inability to access the advice they need.

With the ongoing effects of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, our work has never been more necessary or more in demand. To respond properly, we feel the need to grow our Board and, in so doing, our capacity to lead. In particular, we are seeking a more active programme of engagement between the trustees and staff and volunteers and the Barnet community. We want to recruit up to five new Trustees, including a Treasurer.

Our Trustees shape the strategic direction of Citizens Advice Barnet. The Board sets objectives and targets for the Chief Officer and monitors their progress. The Board also provides advice and guidance for the Chief Officer and management team. The Board is collectively responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organisation and that the proper financial controls are in place.

Trustees must be able to:

  • Accept the responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee.

  • Learn about and follow Citizens Advice Barnet’s aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection.

  • Read reports, exercise good independent judgment and make decisions based on evidence.

  • Listen well and respectfully speak your own mind.

  • Work as part of a team, understanding that, at times, you may not personally agree with board decisions.

  • Review accounts with support of the Treasurer.

  • Undertake training as required.

We are particularly interested in applications from candidates with any of the below skills / experience / expertise, individually or in combination:

  • HR management

  • Marketing & PR

  • Legal (ideally including premises and property)

  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

  • Charity sector experience as a service user, volunteer and/or employee

  • Local connections in Barnet – with local businesses, schools, faith groups and/or local government

  • Qualified accountant with management experience (for the Treasurer role)

The time commitment is 1-2 days per month. While the Trustee and Treasurer roles are unremunerated, expenses will be paid. The term for a Trustee is 3 years.

We encourage applicants who are from underrepresented groups with protected characteristics, as we value having a diverse pool of applicants to find the best candidate.

If you would like to receive an Information Pack for this role with details on how to apply, please send an expression of interest and (optional but appreciated) a CV or professional profile in confidence to our consultant, Jenny Hills at executive@harrishill.co.uk
