At Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse (STADA), we are seeking an exceptional individual to join us as Chair of the Board, providing strategic leadership to the charity and ensuring effective governance in service of our vision and mission.

Join us in making a real difference to survivors of domestic abuse and contribute to our mission of ending domestic violence in every community. As Chair, you will lead the board in an inclusive manner, fostering collaboration and supporting the team while providing both support and challenge to the Chief Executive Officer. You will also serve as an ambassador for the charity, representing our values and advocating for our cause.

STADA is a leading UK charity dedicated to bringing communities together to end domestic abuse. We work collaboratively with a range of organisations including the police, criminal justice partners, housing, social services, healthcare workers, and charities to identify and respond effectively to domestic abuse through our pioneering approach called the Coordinated Community Response. Our aim is to ensure that survivors receive the best support at the time they need it, while holding abusers accountable and preventing domestic abuse.

Key details:

  • Role: Chair of Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse

  • The Chair is appointed for a three-year term, renewable for two further terms, with a maximum tenure of nine years.

  • This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

  • The time commitment includes attending two board meetings annually (currently held remotely) and a monthly scheduled meeting with the CEO. Additionally, there is an annual half-day strategy session.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring the achievement of STADA's mission, and setting the direction and vision for the organisation.

  • Lead the board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, and safeguard the charity’s reputation and values, ensuring their alignment with the mission.

  • Contribute actively to the board's role in setting overall policy, defining goals, and evaluating performance.  Plan the annual cycle of board meetings, set agendas, and chair and facilitate these meetings, providing direction to board policymaking.

  • Ensure the financial stability of the charity working with the Chief Executive Officer to oversee the charity’s affairs and support its development.

  • Support and represent the charity externally, being an effective ambassador.

  • Appoint and monitor the performance of the Chief Executive Officer.

As well as a close alignment with our work and values, you will demonstrate:

  • Experience as a Chair or engaged trustee of a not for-profit-organisation of a similar size

  • Experience of senior leadership in developing vision and strategy for an organisation

  • Business acumen, with experience of developing income sources and delivering financial sustainability in a not-for-profit context

  • Experience of committee work

  • Good knowledge of the Domestic Abuse Sector and commitment to the elimination of Domestic Abuse against women and girls

  • An understanding of the role and operation of second tier organisations and their effectiveness

  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship
